    A certified organic wine, the 2018 Barolo is delicate and fine with a pretty bouquet that is redolent of wild rose, lilac and candied orange skin. Tart berry notes are also a protagonist with cassis and dried pomegranate. This vintage is very fine and smooth in texture with mild, accessible tannins. This classic Barolo from Brezza can be enjoyed in the near or medium term. Exactly 21,459 bottles were released.

    I don't think I have ever seen a Barolo in a glass cork, and honestly, I wouldn't have guessed that the appellation authorities allowed such as thing, as winemaking regions such as Barolo tend to be quite conservative. Surprise, surprise, I have this rare specimen from a 17,600-bottle release in front of me now. Made with organically farmed fruit, the Giacomo Brezza e Figli 2016 Barolo is open and ready to go. If you anticipated some reduction, there is none to be found, although I did open my bottle a few hours before tasting (as I did all the samples in this report). There is some youthful tightness here with sour cherry, almond, cola and a ferrous or earthy quality. I would suggest another few years to allow the wine to flesh out further.

    The 2014 Barolo is on the thinnest side of the naturally thin (in appearance, I mean) Nebbiolo grape. The wine pours from the glass with medium shades of crimson, ruby and Baltic amber. The bouquet delivers pressed rose, lavender bud, cassis and dried fig. The shortcomings of this notoriously difficult vintage are apparent here in terms of the wine's lesser aromatic intensity and the very lean and compact performance it gives to the palate. Drink this wine sooner rather than later. Some 12,493 bottles were produced.

    The 2011 Barolo opens to a dark color and medium concentration. The wine presents aromas that are sweet and balsamic in character, with cherry, rosemary oil and cola. The intensity is noteworthy, and the wine leaves a deep impression in the mouth. You can feel it for many long minutes, thanks to its menthol freshness.

    The 2007 Barolo Classico offers up a classic Nebbiolo profile of dusty red cherries, crushed rose petal, tar, licorice and worn-in leather. It shows lovely inner sweetness and perfume in a soft, approachable style that is sure to find many admirers. Readers who want to discover the essence of Nebbiolo and Barolo without spending a fortune may want to start here. This is a fabulous wine for the money. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2020.
