The 1999 Merlot exhibits a deep ruby color in addition to dense, sweet notes of mocha, berry fruit, and espresso in its soft, fleshy, forward, jammy style. Enjoy it over the next 5-6 years. This is an exceptionally well-made offering from a region in southern Italy, not far from Rome's international airport. It is barrique aged. The wine is technically impressive, possessing a dense ruby/purple color as well as plenty of toasty new oak and sweet tannin. That being said, there is a certain international style to this wine. Readers looking for reasonably good Merlot that won't break the bank should check out Casale del Giglio's 1997 Merlot (100% Merlot aged in wood for 12 months). Dried herbs, mocha, coffee, and berry notes emerge from this dark ruby-colored wine.
