Representing a single parcel that fills only three barrels, Philippe Colin's 2007 Puligny-Montrachet reveals its one-third new wood a bit in lanolin and resin notes on a nose otherwise dedicated to ripe peach, yellow plum, citrus, and nut oils. A nice balance between creaminess and vivacity seems to have been struck on the palate of this well-proportioned Puligny, but a bit of resin and outright woodiness mingling salt and chalk notes keeps the finish from being as refreshing or fruit-filled as it otherwise might. I would plan on enjoying this over the next 2-3 years.
Since splitting the family inheritance with his brother Bruno in 2004, Philippe Colin has taken on supplemental grape contracts, but only where he is able to personally work the vines and call the shots at harvest. In 2007, he picked his entire acreage in one week, beginning September 4, and lightly chaptalized his wines to levels generally just on either side of 13%.
