Aromas of sweet cassis, rich soil, espresso roast and grilled squab introduce the 2017 Aloxe-Corton Village (Maison Louis Jadot), a medium to full-bodied wine that's nicely concentrated, its impressively fleshy core of fruit framed by fine but abundant tannins. It isn't easy to find such a supple but intense example of Aloxe-Corton Village, so this is a truly impressive effort from Jadot.

The 2016 Aloxe-Corton Villages has a simple, slightly rustic bouquet that needs a little more delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with finer tannins than I expected after the nose, with clean red berry fruit laced with tobacco, though the finish is simple and knows its place.

The 2015 Aloxe-Corton Villages has a simple, but effective bouquet with bright red cherry and strawberry fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with chewy tannin, solid in the mouth with good weight, albeit missing some detail and tension towards the finish.

All three of the village wines produced in Cote de Beaune are competent examples of their appellations. The 1990 Aloxe Corton is spicy and rich, with significant tannins in the finish. Less impressive than the Pommard and Volnay, it remains a pleasant example from this appellation. Given the number of wines produced by Louis Jadot in 1990, it is hard to believe anyone has ever been more successful with so many different appellations. Moreover, what is so admirable about the Jadot red burgundies is that each of the wines is different. Jadot enjoyed remarkable success in the Cote de Beaune. Given the fact that these wines sell at lower prices than Jadot's offerings from the Cote de Nuits, consumers have an opportunity to purchase some stunning red burgundies from a great vintage at exceptionally fair prices. Furthermore, as I indicated in issue 83, all of Jadot's 1990s were bottled without filtration.
