    The effect of the warmer vintage is noticeable in the 2020 Ultreia when tasted next to other wines from 2021, a cooler year. This comes from the zone of Molinaseca in Ponferrada on slate soils with more Alicante Bouschet that delivers a darker profile, in color and aromatic palette, quite different from the other Ultreia range. It feels quite heady and ripe, with notes of prunes and bruised apples. The palate reveals abundant, slightly dusty tannins. It's a little too ripe for my taste. Some 9,000 bottles produced.

    The 2019 Ultreia is mostly from the Ponferrada zone on slate soils and produced with long macerations and flor in the aging. The wine has an earthy profile, so it's very different, earthy and nutty, with darker aromas, which I often find in the slate wines. It has notes of iron and iodine, soy sauce and something salty. Some 5,000 bottles produced. The 2020 was still in barrel, as it matured with the skins for nine months in oak vat!

    The 2017 Ultreia was produced with grapes from slate soils in the zone of Ponferrada and perhaps with more grapes from Valtuille de Abajo, as there was frost in Ponferrada. So, this year is unusual and could be 50/50, but in 2018, it will be again 100% Ponferrada. There is quite a lot of Garnacha Tintorera (Godello that is used for the white) and a small percentage of other varieties; the Garnacha Tintorera provides freshness, and in some years there is even an herbal twist. In this 2017, there is even a note of orange peel that I associate with freshness. This is quite classical, without the generosity of some 2017s. They usually bottle before the summer, but the 2018 was still unbottled because of a small delay, and then there was the lockdown. This was bottled in November 2019. 5,000 bottles produced.

    The 2016 Ultreia was all produced from a large, seven-hectare vineyard that they finally purchased in late 2018. The source has changed, because in 2015 they started a new project in Ponferrada (still unreleased), and the vineyards from Ponferrada that were previously used for this wine were saved for those wines. It has a long maceration yet is not extracted at all; on the contrary, it's medium-bodied, with great finesse. It's floral and elegant, very attractive. They purchased the vineyard because they saw it produced great wines. 5,000 bottles produced.

    There is a part of the 2015 Ultreia, from grapes grown on slate soils in the Ponferrada zone, that Pérez thinks are responsible for a faint animal character in the wine. The rest of the grapes are sourced in Valtuille de Abajo on clay soils. The palate revealed some grainy tannins and a dry finish. 7,000 bottles were filled in June 2017.
