This is a pretty, easy-drinking red with plenty of dark volcanic character along with blackcurrant, lavender bud, white pepper and campfire ash. The Terredora di Paolo 2020 Lacryma Christi Vesuvio Rosso is a mid-weight wine with fine, dusty tannins that are well integrated (after a brief six to eight months in oak). The wine is true to the grape with a fresh, food-friendly disposition. Production is 6,000 bottles.

The 2017 Lacryma Christi Vesuvio Rosso is a plump, ready and accessible wine. It opens to medium color saturation and shows ripe aromas of cassis and wild raspberry. Those aromas do reflect the softness and sweetness of the hot and dry 2017 growing season. This is a simple red wine, but this vintage has the heft and power to stand up to pork roast or porchetta.

The 2011 Lacryma Christi Vesuvio Rosso is an elegant red wine with evident tones of pressed rose petal, cassis and dried blackberry. These aromas conspire to create an authentic and graceful taste of Southern Italy. What's more, this expression of Piedirosso from the warm 2011 vintage shows evolved tones of licorice and spice at the back. There is a sour cherry note followed by a very dry finish.

Terredora is firing on all cylinders these days. Virtually all of the wines I have tasted recently have been superb. The 2008 Lacryma Christi is 100% Piedirosso, one of Campania’s indigenous grapes, that spends eight months in French oak. This pedigreed red makes an impression with its bold wild cherries, smoke, ash, licorice, cracked black pepper and leather, all nuances that are typical of Piedirosso.
