A vineyard selection fermented in 600-liter open barrels aged for 22 months in French oak of which 40% is new, the impressive 2009 Eenzaamheid Shiraz (Afrikaan for “solitude”) has a juicy, ebullient bouquet of red currant, raspberry, violet and a dash of white pepper. The palate is full-bodied and though not a complex Shiraz, it is well balanced and pure with crisp, vibrant peppery Shiraz fruit on the long finish. Drink 2012-2017. Based in Paarl, Fairview is one of South Africa’s historic names, synonymous with the Back family who bought the estate in 1937. They produce a range of well-priced, mainly Rhone inspired wines under the watchful eye of winemaker Anthony de Jager. They also produce the ever-popular entry level La Capra and Goats do Roam range that were tasted for this report, but not all made the grade.Importer: Vineyard Brands, Birmingham, Alabama.
