As the name suggests, the 2007 Primitivo Merlot blends the indigenous Primitivo, Italy’s version of Zinfandel, with the international Merlot. This is a sweet, layered offering, with plenty of dark blackberries, earthiness, and licorice, all of which flow from the wine’s soft-textured frame. A long, caressing finish rounds out the wine nicely. This is a promising effort, and wine that will be interesting to follow closely. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2010. Matane is yet another of the Neil and Maria Empson-owned labels.
