A monumental bottle of Burgundy from this great south-facing vineyard, the 1955 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Les Cazetiers unfurls in the glass with aromas of rich, musky dark berries mingled with notions of incense, rose, dark chocolate and spices. Full-bodied, layered and multidimensional, it's rich and concentrated, with a deep core of fruit and a long, perfumed finish. Madame Bize-Leroy isn't one to divulge her sources, but if I had to hazard a guess, this wine bears the stylistic signatures of the Domaine Clair-Daü. Whoever made it, however, certainly knew what they were doing!
