Two of Coppo's current releases did not impress me - the 1995 Barbera d'Asti L'Avocata and the 1994 Mondaccione, a curiosity made from 100% Freisa. However, two other wines were good, especially in view of the fact they are from the 1994 and 1995 vintages, both problematic years for Piedmont. The 1995 Barbera d'Asti Camp du Rouss is a 100% Barbera from 30-40 year old vines, aged in small French oak barrels, and bottled unfiltered. The wine reveals a medium ruby color, ripe, spicy, richly fruity aromas, and round, pretty, medium to full-bodied flavors. Obvious new oak, combined with sweet fruit, and low acidity, particularly for a Barbera, has resulted in a delicious, up-front, mid-weight wine to drink over the next 1-2 years.
