The 2005 Barbera d’Alba Tre Vigne is a great introduction to the house style. It offers perfumed aromatics and clean, focused fruit, with subtly intertwined licorice and tar nuances. This soft, vibrant Barbera is not to be missed. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2009. Vietti is one of the most historic properties in Piedmont. The estate is best known for its top-flight Barolos, yet in recent years I have been equally impressed with the entry-level wines. These are among the finest wines being made anywhere in Italy. A pleasant, soft, easy to like wine with plenty of ripe fruit and big upfront sweet flavors. On the downside, it seemed quite soft, and faded away on the palate. The finish was also a tad short. ——M.G.(12/22/2011)—— 86
