The 2007 Barbaresco Asili flows with terrific purity in its dark red fruit. This rich, enveloping Asili impresses for its density and balance, both of which are first rate. This is a relatively muscular Barbaresco from Asili that stands apart from the more feminine wines that tend to emerge from this site. The Asili is another of the new releases from Chiarlo that needed several hours of air to show at its best. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2027. This is a strong set of new releases from Michele Chiarlo. This supple red is all about cherry, tobacco and mineral flavors, featuring a hint of flowers and herbs. Nonetheless, this is tight and chewy, with a licorice tinge on the finish. Best from 2012 through 2028. -BS

The Asili cru is always a top performer, and although this vintage from acclaimed winemaker Michele Chiarlo is excellent, it’s not quite outstanding. There’s a hint of apple skin or orange zest that imparts a buoyant and immediate disposition.
