A superb discovery from an area of Tuscany better known for its dry whites made from the Vernaccia grape than for red wines, the Fattoria Paradiso has turned out this impressive offering.
There are 300 cases of the single-vineyard 1997 Saxa Calida (Latin for "hot stones"). This Merlot/Cabernet Sauvignon blend is aged in French oak. It boasts a dense ruby/purple color as well as big, thick, chewy, mocha, black currant, and kirsch liqueur-like aromas and flavors, fabulous purity, well-integrated, smoky wood, an unctuous texture, low acidity, and an explosive finish. Already delicious, it promises to evolve for a decade. This is an impressive offering from the historic village of San Gimignano.
