The 1979 Musigny Grand Cru is one of the most remarkable wines that I have ever tasted in terms of a wine going from "not much" to "wow" over 60 minutes. In the beginning, the bouquet is just so nondescript that you just shove the glass to one side and presume that it is simply a Musigny from a modest vintage that is past its best. I wonder how many just left it at that? Come back after 60 minutes and you have a completely different wine in your glass. The aromatics blossom with dried rose petals, hints of brambly red fruit and chlorophyll. The palate similarly transmogrifies from a fatigued Musigny to one with fine tannin, pretty black and red fruit, strawberry pastille, oyster shell and dried herbs towards the finish. I will confess that I originally scored this around 85 points. After an hour it was hovering around 10 points higher. There you go - the magic and caprice of mature Burgundy. Tasted February 2016.
