This is a well-priced value wine (with a large production of 240,000 bottles) from the far north of Italy. The Alois Lageder 2019 Alto Adige Chardonnay opens to a lean appearance and a light straw-gold color. The bouquet presents classic and informal varietal aromas of citrus, green melon, cut grass and honey. This is a terrific choice for Chinese takeout with a portion of crispy spring rolls.

The 2018 Alto Adige Chardonnay is a steady and mildly perfumed wine that gives you a genuine and naked expression of the grape. The wine is simple and linear with creamy lemon, quince and pear. The finish is lean and crisp, but there is enough volume here for a pairing with Thai shrimp in coconut milk. The wine ages on the fine lees in stainless steel vats for four months. Some 206,700 bottles were made. This wine offers terrific value.

The 2017 Alto Adige Chardonnay is made in a tight and reductive style that prizes precision and sharpness. The bouquet offers lime, grapefruit and white peach. The mouthfeel is absolutely fresh and tonic as you might expect. This is a lip-smacking good entry-level white wine available at a bargain price. Bottle production is 187,000 units strong.

Packaged in a screwcap bottle, the 2016 Alto Adige Chardonnay offers excellent value. This is a subtle yet sophisticated expression that pleases all the senses. The wine opens to creamy notes of apricot, lemon custard and almond paste. Winemaking embraces a fresh and linear approach, yet this vintage offers an impressive sense of volume and dimension. These qualities make this wine especially delicious at this low price.

The 2010 Chardonnay shows the cool, steely side of the grape in a typical expression of Alto Adige that emphasizes energy and minerality. Grapefruit, lemon and mint are layered into the wiry finish. The 2010 is best enjoyed over the next year or two, while the aromas and flavors retain their vibrancy. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2014. Alois Lageder now has two distinct ranges.
