The 2014 Sympatico is based on Tempranillo, complemented by 12% Grenache and 12% Monastrell. It's an inky powerhouse, offering up aromas and flavors of ripe black fruit, candied peel and plum preserve, followed by a full-bodied, powerful palate laden with chewy Tempranillo tannins that make it the most grippy wine in the Caliza range this year.

A Tempranillo-dominated blend that includes 24% Grenache, the 2013 Sympatico is fresh and lively, with the telltale Temp notes of cedar, dried herbs, leather, spice and cherry fruit. Medium to full-bodied, with solid structure, it will keep nicely for 7-8 years.

Another savory 2012, the 2012 Sympatico (64% Tempranillo and 36% Grenache) has lots of sweet black and red cherry fruits, cedar, savory herbs and hints of olive tapenade to go with a medium to full-bodied, supple, balanced feel on the palate. While I found a lot of 2012s from Carl to be heady and slightly firm, this has solid mid-palate depth, plenty of texture and fine tannin on the finish. Enjoy it anytime over the coming 5-7 years.

Dry and earthy, with the textbook edgy tannin of Tempranillo, the 2010 Sympatico, a blend of 75% Tempranillo, 13% Syrah and 12% Grenache, delivers a spicy, mineral-laced bouquet of dried cherries, dusty earth, licorice and graphite. This is followed up by a chewy, savory wine that has good concentration, a medium to full-bodied, balanced feel and excellent length on the finish. Still tight and slightly closed, it will benefit from another handful of years in the cellar and have upwards of a decade of more of total longevity. Drink now-2020.
