I do not know of any other California winery that has put together such a blend as Montelena's St. Vincent. This used to be a wine produced to utilize some of their Sangiovese. However, like many wineries, Montelena feels (as do I) that California Sangiovese is generally a failure, and can not compete with Italian Sangiovese. The 1998 St. Vincent exhibits smoky, tar, peppery, leathery, berry flavors, not much weight or depth, but good ripeness, a robust personality, and slightly high alcohol (14.1%). The 1997 St. Vincent (3,000 cases) is an intriguing blend of 60% Zinfandel, 30% Primitivo, and 10% Sangiovese. It reveals a distinctively Italian personality with notes of melted asphalt, new saddle leather, berry fruit, pepper, and spice.
