Even slightly better is the mostly Grenache-based 2009 Coteaux du Tricastin. Deep, dark ruby with plenty of Provencal spice, roasted herbs, kirsch, and black currants, this medium-bodied wine is “stacked and packed” in addition to having silky tannins. Another sleeper of the vintage, it should drink well for 2-3 years. The brilliant Jacques Granges remains in control of all winemaking at Delas Freres, and he has produced some of his greatest wines in 2009 for the northern cuvees. With bright, crunchy raspberry and forest fruit notes, this wine betrays its Grenache heart (about 70% of the blend with Syrah and Cinsault in support). Young and upfront, those ripe fruits are wrapped up in fine tannins and polished off by a clean, refreshing finish. Alc: 13%. £8.49
