The 2019 Richebourg Grand Cru has turned out brilliantly, offering up a complex bouquet of cherries, berries and plums mingled with oriental spices, rich soil tones, rose petals and blood orange. Full-bodied, velvety and layered, it's muscular and concentrated, with huge reserves of fruit that largely conceal its broad-shouldered chassis of ripe, velvety tannins. Long and penetrating, this is the high point of Vincent Mongeard's portfolio this year.

The 2018 Richebourg Grand Cru is brilliant, soaring from the glass with dramatic aromas of cherries, raspberries and sweet spices mingled with hints of rose petals, incense and dark chocolate. Full-bodied, layered and multidimensional, it's rich and enveloping, with huge concentration and a compelling sense of completeness. Long and penetrating, this is a very impressive example of the vintage.

The 2014 Richebourg Grand Cru comes from the domaine's 0.31-hectares of 40- to 60-year-old vine and matured in 100% new oak with 100% whole bunch. It has a deep and broody bouquet at first, plenty of damp undergrowth scents infusing the dark plum and raspberry fruit. The palate has a lot of grip on the entry, a sturdy backbone here, dark berry fruit mixed with saline notes, focused and quite firm on the finish. Give this several years in bottle like the Grands Echézeaux. I am intrigued to see which of these two grand crus ultimately comes out on top.
