This wine from Librandi is one of the bottles that put Calabria on the world wine map. A pure expression of the Magliocco grape, the 2016 Magno Megonio shows the dark color intensity and rich textural fiber that is characteristic of this indigenous grape. The wine ages in barrique for 12 months. This adds a frame of spice and cinnamon that surrounds a core of bold blackberry fruit. You do feel the 15% alcohol. Some 40,000 bottles were made.

From the IGT Val di Neto appellation in Calabria, the 2012 Magno Megonio is one of Italy's most interesting expressions of the little-known Magliocco grape. There's a wild and unruly side to the wine with Morello cherry and blackberry preserves followed by a reasonably dark and well concentrated appearance. Sweet spice and tobacco follow in close succession. Soft tannins and alcoholic fruit appear on the slightly sweet finish. Magno Megonio is the wine that brought fame and fortune to Librandi and Calabria on a world scale.

Magno Megonico, from Calabria in the deep south of Italy, is an edgy, sharp wine with a pointed vein of acidity that carries through the end.
