    The entry-level Marchesi Antinori 2019 Villa Antinori is Sangiovese blended with smaller parts Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and other complementary red grapes. It offers roundness, supple red and purple fruit flavors, balanced spice and freshness. The main theme here is primary fruit and general vitality. The wine philosophy is meant to be an expression of the Antinori brand, and indeed fruit is sourced from across the family holdings in Tuscany. You get terrific value in an easy-drinking red.

    This informal wine is based on Sangiovese but has other complementary red grapes in the blend and sees its fruit sourced from various parts of Tuscany. The 2018 Villa Antinori shows some ripeness and sweetness with an accessible and open-knit quality of fruit. The wine's aromas of dark cherry and blackberry would stand up nicely to a classic Tuscan dish of pappardelle al ragù di cinghiale (ribbon pasta with wild boar sauce) thanks to the natural acidity and freshness inherent to this wine. Production is three million bottles.

    This entry-level red is made with fruit sourced from across the region of Tuscany, and what is used here consequently serves to reduce yields in preparation for Marchesi Antinori's more expensive wines. The 2017 Villa Antinori is not a declared or fixed blend, but past vintages have consisted of mostly Sangiovese with smaller parts Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and other red grapes. Everything is fermented in stainless steel, and the wine is aged briefly in French, Hungarian and Californian oak. This vintage saw rich and concentrated fruit by harvest time, and you taste that extra extraction here with plumy dark fruit, sweet blackberry and candied almond. The wine is plush, sweet and pleasantly fruit-driven. I would suggest drinking it within the next year or two while that dark fruit is most vibrant. Production was down in this vintage with 1,360,000 bottles released in March 2020.

The 2016 Villa Antinori is made with red grapes sourced in various parts of Tuscany and production is a staggering 3.6 million bottles per year (300,000 12-bottle cases). All the kinks have been worked out in this value wine, and you can count on fresh fruit flavors backed by light spice and leather.

    With more than three million bottles produced, the 2015 Villa Antinori is easy to find, affordable and easy drinking. Fruit comes from various parts of Tuscany (not one specific zone), and the blend is mostly Sangiovese with Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot thrown in. A fraction of the wine is aged in new oak, and the rest is put into neutral barrel. What more can you say? This is precisely the kind of wine you'll want to pick up for outdoor barbecues or pizza night in front of the television. It offers freshness with abundant sweet fruit.
