In great vintages, Su Hua Newton makes a selection of the finest barrels called Epic, a Merlot-dominated wine. The unfiltered 2001 Epic could be mistaken for a Pomerol/St.-Emilion. Composty aromas of earth, licorice, black cherry liqueur, mocha, and cocoa along with a hint of white chocolate jump from the glass of this saturated ruby/purple-colored 2001. The 1999 Epic (Merlot) offers a broodingly backward, intense, concentrated mouthful of wine with high tannin and structure in addition to impressive layers of both richness and extract. The wine is thick, with notes of black fruits, espresso, and chocolate submerged into its earthy personality, with a dry, austere finish (hence the question mark). Patience is required.
