The 2016 Termanthia comes from a rainier year that resulted in a later harvest of ripe grapes that delivered a powerful wine with 15% alcohol and soft acidity. It fermented in oak and stainless steel vats with selected yeasts and matured in French oak barrels, 80% of them new, for 22 months. This shows the change in style, and it has better freshness and more acidity than the 2015 I tasted next to it: the vintage was different, and the work in the winery also changed in the direction to have less extraction and less oak, showing more transparently the power of the old ungrafted vines. 9,800 bottles were filled in June 2018.

Dense and compact, there's a sense of restraint to this potent red, with flavors of black raspberry puree, tea rose, fig cake, dark chocolate and herb-laced balsamico unfurling slowly on the palate. The dark and brooding flavor range is buoyed by lively acidity, and minerally iron and smoke accents show on the finish, alongside fine, taut tannins. The 2015 Termanthia is a selection from 120-year-old ungrafted Tinta de Toro vines from six plots that fermented in French oak vats with commercial yeasts and matured in barrels for 22 months; this vintage is when they started using less new oak. It has 15% alcohol and a pH of 3.67. Tasting this next to the 2016, it feels like there's more toasty oak here, and it's very balsamic with notes of camphor and a little minty, a little heady and quite ripe with black rather than red fruit, abundant tannins and plenty of oak-related flavors. 10,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in June 2017 and launched in 2022.

This generous yet refined red shows a flashy, polished texture and supports expressive layers of blackberry, espresso, oak spice, wild herb and loamy earth flavors. This is muscular and well crafted, with elements of anise, red plum and rose petal fine tuning the finish. Once again, I tasted the 2014 Termanthia, a selection from 120-year-old ungrafted vines that is heady, ripe and powerful, voluptuous and juicy, with lots of concentration, tannins and everything else, powerful and ripe, impressive and showy. It's teeth-staining dark, with abundant tannins, a round, lush texture and gobs and gobs of fruit. It seems to be evolving very slowly, and the tannins still need some powerful food. 8,500 bottles and 250 magnums were filled in June 2016.
