Last Tasted 3/94An impressive performance in a mediocre year, the 1983 Hess Reserve remains youthful, with a saturated dark purple color revealing no sign of age. The moderately intense bouquet of sweet vanillin, herbs, black fruits, and minerals is enticing. Even more impressive are the wine's full-bodied richness, excellent purity, and ripe, cassis fruit buttressed by adequate acidity and moderate tannin. One of the finest 1983 Napa Cabernet Sauvignons, the wine requires another 3-4 years of cellaring; it should last for two decades.
