The robust 2002 Merlot Three Palms Vineyard (75% Merlot, 11% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Petit Verdot and 5% Cabernet Franc) is slightly angular (which kept my score from going higher). It boasts 14.6% natural alcohol and was aged 20 months in French oak. Plum, mocha, espresso and herb characteristics make an appearance in this very good, medium-bodied 2002 that appears to have reached full maturity. Drink it over the next 5-6 years. Tel. This wine shows the usual thick, firm tannins of this vineyard, although they’re a lot finer than they used to be. It’s also a bit sweetish for a red wine that should be dry. There’s a cloying, syrupy taste to the finish. ——S.H.(12/1/2005)—— 84
