A producer new to me, Domaine de Monteillet has made quite a first impression! The 1991 Rhone Valley vintage was strongest in Condrieu and Cote Rotie, but this wine is a candidate for the best 1991 from St.-Joseph. New oak was not employed, so you can imagine the richness of the peppery, blackcurrant-flavored Syrah fruit in this wine. There is a deep, viscous texture, sweet, chewy flavors, and gobs of fruit in the finish. Although it will age for up to a decade, I would opt for drinking this beauty over the next 7-8 years.
