A hidden gem is the 2011 Vin de France Seul en Scene! Showing more fruit and depth than the l’Appel des Sereines, it shows the sun-driven nature of the vintage with its kirsch, licorice, incense and spice-styled aromas and flavors. This medium-bodied, rounded and nicely textured effort has loads of charm and a sexy, hard to resist profile. Enjoy it over the coming 3-5 years. Made by Francois Villard, with varying degrees of whole cluster fermentation, these wines shows the racier, focused and peppery side to Syrah. Bright acids, notable tannin and pure, clean flavors are the norm here. Given the high level of stem usage, the vast majority of these will benefit from short term cellaring.
