The 2009 Brunello di Montalcino’s organically-farmed fruit has fared well despite the sudden heat spike toward the end of summer. The wine first shows a dark and brooding thanks to its inky appearance. The bouquet is accented with bright spots of dried cherry and red currant that are deftly balanced against warmer tones of autumnal leaf and mild tobacco. The wine is approachable and smooth, and although it doesn’t show the same level of intensity you find in the best vintages, the wine plays the cards it does have very well. Drink: 2015-2020. Le Chiuse enjoys fortuitous positioning on the northeast side of the Montosoli hill at about 300 meters above sea level. The current owner, Simonetta Valiani is the granddaughter of Tancredi Biondi Santi and the estate grapes were once used to make the venerable Biondi-Santi Riserva.
