The 1994 Cooke Vineyard Zinfandel reveals an opaque purple color followed by a peppery, smoked meat-scented, dense, rich, concentrated nose, dusty, rich, tannic flavors, surprisingly tart acidity, and admirable depth, fat, and richness in the long finish. This wine is still unresolved and disjointed, but save for the high acidity, all the component parts are impressive, so it should be only a matter of time until this wine develops into an outstanding Zinfandel for consuming over 6-7 years. Ravenswood has again fashioned an impressive array of distinctive Zinfandels. Only the Sonoma and Napa offerings were in bottle when I tasted them, although the single vineyard wines were about to be bottled. NOTE: All the wines in this article were tasted in May, 1996.
