The 2009 Perpetual is a blend of 90% Carinena and 10% Garnacha that was picked between September 2 and October 3. Many of the vines are between 80 and 100 years old and planted on slopes up to 70% steep. It is matured in 100% new oak for 18 months. The aromatics exhibit more delineation than the 2009 Salmos with creme de cassis, iodine, lavender and a touch of dark plum. The palate is still very oaky on the entry although there are sweet, spicy black fruits laced with white pepper and white fennel towards the weighty, sappy finish. Still a little unresolved, it should knit together nicely over 5-6 years. Drink 2014-2025.
Torres, who needs no introduction, owns two vineyards in Bellmunt and Porrera, their respective hot and cooler microclimates offering a degree of balance in their two Priorat offerings, Salmos and Perpetual. The wines are augmented by outsourced fruit and I was told that they are presently seeking more old vine Carinena.
