As in other recent vintages, the 1987s from the Domaine de la Pousse d'Or taste stripped and eviscerated. There is no doubt that proprietor Gerald Potel's decision to filter his wines in 1979 has had some effect on the quality, but I suspect the problem may be more than just filtration. He may also have excessive yields although Potel steadfastly denies this. The wine is lean and hard with high acidity, and lacks charm and grace. One should not criticize burgundy for its light color, because often Pinot Noir does not render deeply colored wines, but this wine possesses a suspiciously shallow color, and the tannins are excessively elevated considering the concentration of fruit.
