The 2009 Barolo Cannubi is the sweetest and the brightest of the bunch with a playful display of dried cherry, cassis and wild strawberry aromas. There are floral tones at the back followed by spice, tar and licorice. Like most of these wines, the Cannubi is also suited for near-term enjoyment. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2020. It must be the name “Adelaide” that leads my thoughts to exotic and far-away Australia, but every time I encounter the wines from this estate, the words “New World” immediately come to mind. It’s a little wine-tinted Rorschach test that never fails. Needless to say, the heavy use of French oak does a lot to reinforce that stubborn mental tick. A complex red, featuring rose, cherry, raspberry, anise and spice aromas and flavors. This is harmonious, silky and firmly structured, with a long, lingering aftertaste of fruit, chocolate and spice.
