    Blueberry, blackberry and chocolate aromas yet subtle and perfumed. Full-bodied with chewy tannins and lots of structure. Shows depth and has a purpose. Needs time to come together soon. Try after 2027.

    The 2018 Brunello di Montalcino Vigna La Casa is born in a beautiful vineyard with long vistas and warm sunsets. This production of 14,000 bottles ages in oak for two years. You definitely taste the sweet spice and cinnamon from the barrel aging, but the wine also presents a good amount of dark fruit and plum. It ends with soft tannins and even a hint of oaky sweetness that underlines its accessibility. Some 14,000 bottles were made.

    The Caparzo 2017 Brunello di Montalcino Vigna La Casa offers more intensity and depth next to the annata expressions (also tasted in this report). It's not much, but there is enough of a difference to justify the special single-vineyard selection. Wild fruit, licorice and balsam herb add vertical lift to the bouquet. The magical sharpness and brightness of this wine is linked to the soils of Vigna La Casa, which are blanketed with shards of galestro schist. These soils mitigate the warm growing season. Production is 15,000 bottles.

    Caparzo's 2015 Brunello di Montalcino Vigna La Casa opens to a very fine and precise bouquet that is carefully assembled with crisp berry notes, smoke, tar, licorice and toasted almond. The wine remains very tight and crisp overall, but it does cede to more volume and puts on more weight as it opens in the glass. There is a pretty note of crushed stone or granite on the close. The La Casa vineyard site is characterized by clay soils broken up with shards of Galestro schist that adds to the cool and fresh profile of the wine. This lovely single-vineyard Brunello is almost ready to drink (wait a few more years), but it should also withstand the next 10 years of cellar aging should you decide to put your bottle aside. Some 15,000 bottles were produced. The wine was bottled in August 2019 and released in January 2020.

    The single-vineyard 2013 Brunello di Montalcino Vigna la Casa is immediately distinguished by aromas of smoke, flint and dark fruit. This wine offers more depth and complexity compared to Caparzo's base Brunello from this same excellent vintage. Unlike the base Brunello, however, this wine will definitely require more time to open and flesh out as it continues its bottle evolution. The fruit is a little less accessible at this young stage in the wine's lifespan. It shows lots of energy and tightness at its core that should soften and blossom over the next 5 years. It should be worth the wait.
