The Mazis-Chambertin possesses fabulous color, a rich, powerful, intense bouquet, superb depth, length, and enough concentration, body, and tannin to last until 1999-2004. It may well turn out to be one of the longest-lived wines from what should be a relatively short-lived burgundy vintage. The 1987s of Lalou Bize-Leroy are often just a notch below her phenomenal 1985s. They provide additional convincing evidence that the 1987 vintage is probably the most underrated Burgundy vintage (along with 1980) in the last 20 years.

This is a superlative wine. As one might expect, the Mazis-Chambertin is Leroy's finest 1986 red burgundy, splendidly concentrated with a huge bouquet of deep, spicy, oaky, berry fruit, full body, wonderful layers of extract, and a finish that lasts for several minutes. Drink it between 1997 and 2010.
