The 1994 Chardonnay Reserve exhibits a smoky, rich, apple, butter, and pineapple-scented nose with subtle high quality French oak scents. This lovely wine is full-bodied and rich, although it tastes subdued at present. After 10-15 minutes of airing, it offers up additional sweetness, a lush, ripe mid-palate, and good length. It will continue to drink well for 4-5 years. In fact, it may be even better with 5-6 more months of bottle age. Mondavi's Chardonnays continue to aim for full-bodied flavor, but with increasing degrees of subtlety and elegance. There are three cuvees - Napa Valley, Carneros, and the limited production Reserve. The Reserve Chardonnays of the late seventies and eighties were often excessively woody.
