The 1995 Chardonnay Reserve is initially reticent given its tightly wound first impression. As the wine sits in the glass, it continues to unfold and blossom, providing a top-class example of Mondavi's finest Chardonnay. A smoky, pain grillee, flowery, buttery, citrusy nose is followed by a full-bodied, rich wine with excellent length. This exceptional, young and unevolved Chardonnay is immensely impressive; it will drink well for 4-6 years. Mondavi's Chardonnays continue to aim for full-bodied flavor, but with increasing degrees of subtlety and elegance. There are three cuvees - Napa Valley, Carneros, and the limited production Reserve. The Reserve Chardonnays of the late seventies and eighties were often excessively woody.
